Transportation

Amelia County’s proximity to Richmond provides access to road, rail, air and port facilities. U.S. Route 360 is the major four-lane road in the county. The county is also served by primary routes 153, 307 and 38. Two interstate highways, I-95 and I-64, intersect in Richmond and Interstate 85 begins near Petersburg.

Located within the county is a foot runway which is not paved. Nearby Richmond is also the site of an international airport. The Richmond International Airport services passenger, freight, international and air express aircraft. Airlines include AirTrans, American, Continental, Delta, Eastwind, Northwest, USAirways, ValuJet, and United Airlines.

Norfolk Southern provides piggyback and freight rail service within the county. The railroad's Virginia Division is headquartered in Crewe, which is located just south of Amelia in Nottoway County. Passenger rail service can be found in Richmond, Virginia, via Amtrak.

Bus service is provided along U.S. Route 360 by Greyhound. Central Virginia Transportation, administered through C-PAC, provides limited transportation services to county residents.

Approximately 25 trucking firms serve the area with motor freight service. Carriers include Overnight, Estes, J.B. Hunt, Crewe Transfer, Parrish Trucking, Epps and Huss Trucking.

Less than two hours east of Amelia is the Port of Hampton Roads. This port, which handles 73 million tons of cargo with a $28.5 billion value, is the world's largest natural deepwater port. The fastest growing port in the United States is served by over 75 shipping companies and more than 20 cargo terminals. The Port contains a 50 foot channel with no obstructions. Also located within 35 miles of Amelia is the Port of Richmond which handles the shipping of approximately 500,000 tons of cargo annually. This 25 foot deep inland port is owned by the City of Richmond and managed by a private company. Major cargo imports include tobacco, chemicals, newsprint and pharmaceuticals. Exports include tobacco, chemicals, textiles and forest products.
