Recreation

Many of the county’s recreational activities center around the largely agriculturally-oriented lives of its citizens. An old-fashioned county fair is held annually in September at the Joe H. Paulette Memorial Recreation Park where Amelia residents of all ages actively participate in a number of activities, such as sponsoring booths and entering their prize arts, crafts, produce, and livestock for precious "Blue" Ribbons.

An annual summer Beef Festival, sponsored by the Amelia Educational Foundation, is held at the Tom Scott Recreational Park. The festival draws beef lovers from all over Virginia to Amelia for a day of feasting, music and gathering together with old friends. Bluegrass Festivals are held in the spring and fall of the year and Amelia Day is celebrated annually in May on the Courthouse Square.

The County’s natural resources provide facilities for a number of activities diverse enough to be enjoyed by everyone. The 2,068 acre Amelia Wildlife Management Area, located in northern Amelia County on Route 652, was set aside by the Commission of Gameand Inland Fisheries for fishing and hunting deer, turkey, and other small game. Within the boundaries of the Wildlife Management Area is a sporting clay range where hunters and marksmen can improve their skills in a simulated hunting environment. The Appomattox River and Lake Chesdin also provide fishing access for those willing to try their luck. Bikers can enjoy one bikeway, the East Coast Bicycle Trail, which follows secondary routes through Amelia and neighboring counties. Go-kart racing is also popular with County residents at the Amelia Motor Raceway.
