Amelia Government...

The County of Amelia operates under Commonwealth Law as a traditional government with five elected Board of Supervisor members representing the five election districts, and who serve four year terms. The County is managed by a county administrator who reports to a five-member Board of Supervisors. In addition to the elected Board of Supervisors, the County is also served by five additional elected officials: Clerk of the Circuit Court, Commissioner of the Revenue, Sheriff, Treasurer, and Commonwealth Attorney. Amelia County also has a five member elected School Board. Amelia Courthouse is the county seat and the centralized location of governmental activity.

Government services include police and fire protection. Three state police assigned to the area support the efforts of the 15 member sheriff’s department. Fire service is provided by a volunteer force of 85 people from five fire stations located throughout the county. The county has a fire insurance rating of C-9 within five miles of each fire station and C-10 elsewhere.

The county has adopted a comprehensive plan, zoning ordinance and subdivision ordinance. These ordinances and plans were updated in 1995.
