Woman’s Club
meeting
Mrs. Marguerite Bashaw, owner of Bashaw Life Center in Midlothian,
will discuss nutrition, the use of herbs, and natural healing with
the Woman’s Club of Powhatan County, Inc. on Wednesday, February
21 at 10 a.m. at May Memorial Baptist Church. Refreshments will be

JRD cheerleading competition
The 2001 James River District cheering competition is set for
Wednesday, February 21 at 7 p.m. in the Amelia County High School
gym. Tickets are $3. The Raiders will compete against cheerleaders
from the following schools: Central Senior High (Victoria County),
Goochland High, Cumberland High, Buckingham High, Randolph-Henry
High (Charlotte County), and Prince Edward High.
Amelia County Fair meeting
The Amelia County Fair Association will have a meeting February 22
at First Virginia Bank at 6:30 p.m. the Junior Fair Board and at 7
p.m. the regular association meeting. New members welcome.
Brunswick stew
The V.F.W. Amelia Post 8759 at the Amelia County Veterans Center
will sell Brunswick stew on Friday, February 23 starting at 11
a.m. Cost is $4.50 per quart. To order your stew in advance,
please call Carroll Barnard 561-2946, or John Hutchinson 561-3011
so that your stew will be ready when you come to pick it up.
Proceeds of the sale of this stew will be used to support
community projects.
Amelia blood drive
The Amelia Masonic Lodge is hosting a blood drive from 8:30 a.m.
– 1 p.m. Saturday, February 24 at the lodge’s building at
16403 Five Forks Road (Route 38). All donors will receive a plus

Church of Christ conference
Church of Christ Apostolic Faith is hosting a conference entitled
“Leaders, Followers and Their Responsibilities” Saturday,
February 24. Facilitator for the conference is Bishop Lewis Stokes

"Left Behind"
The movie "Left Behind' will be shown at Arbor Baptist Church
on Sunday, February 25 at 7:30 p.m. The community is invited. The

Health Awareness Week
Amelia County High School’s guidance and physical education
departments are sponsoring Health Awareness Week February 26 –
March 1. Monday features a health screening. An American Family
fitness trainer will visit the school Tuesday. The National Guard
will demonstrate physical training on Wednesday. Trooper Randy
Fletcher will have a safe-driving demonstration Thursday. Call the

Amelia prom committee
The Amelia County After Prom Committee will meet on Tuesday,
February 27 at the Amelia County High School Media Center at 7
p.m. Any citizen of Amelia County who is interested in assisting
the committee to provide a safe environment and wholesome
activities during prom night is encouraged to attend.
Weddings in your home
Lisa Benusa, a floral designer and member of Powhatan Garden Club,
will present a program entitled “Weddings in your Home” at the
club’s March 1 meeting. The club will meet at 7:30 p.m. at May
Memorial Baptist church. After the meeting and presentation,
refreshments will be served. Men and women interested in
gardening, floral design, conservation and related subjects are

JTCC art exhibit
Renowned artist Erjun Zhao’s exhibit, “East Meets the West,”
will be on display until March 2 in the library on John Tyler
Community College’s Chester Campus. Zhao has held many art shows
and published numerous works in the United States and China. An
adjunct instructor at VCU, she has 17 published works. Zhao holds
a master of fine arts in painting and print making from VCU as
well as a master of fine arts equivalent in oil painting from the
Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, China.
Trumpet concert
Arbor Baptist Church will host a concert on Sunday, March 4 at
10:30 a.m. by trumpeter Hoby Freeman of Good News & Prison
Ministry. The community is invited. The church is located at 13701

Women’s day service
Liberty Baptist Church will have its annual Women’s Day service
on Sunday, March 4 at 11 a.m. The Rev. Charlene Gresham, minister
of Liberty Baptist Church, will deliver the message. The Flower
Hill Baptist Church choir will perform. All women are asked to
wear white.
Dementia and depression
John Colletti, PhD, will present a lecture entitled “The
Connection between Dementia and Depression” on Wednesday, March
7 at 7 p.m. at the HealthSouth Rehabilitation Center, 5700
Fitzhugh Ave., Richmond.
Nyhaug sermon
Joyce Montague Nyhaug, daughter of the late Rev. Horace S.
Montague and Lillian T. Montague, will deliver her first sermon
Sunday, March 11 at 5 p.m. at the First Baptist Church South Hill
in Chesapeake. There will be a chartered bus to the service. Call

Cartersville fellowship
Christian Ministries of Our Lord Jesus Christ will celebrate
fellowship on March 11 at 6 p.m. at its sanctuary 1510
Cartersville Road in Cartersville. Services will be held on the
second and fourth Sunday evenings thereafter at 6 p.m. They will
be holding their fist revival services on March 30 at 7:30 p.m.
and March 31 at 6 p.m.
Basic boating course
The Virginia Department of Game & Inland Fisheries, in
co-operation with the Dinwiddie Department of Recreation, will
offer a basic boating course at the Pamplin Administration
Building located at Dinwiddie Courthouse. The dates will be March
24 and 25 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Contact the Dinwiddie

Trial ride for St. Jude’s
A trail ride sponsored by Hunter’s Ridge Equestrian Center for
St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital is set for March 31 at 1 p.m.

Amelia Historic Homes tour set
On April 21 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. you are invited to the second
tour of Historic Homes in Amelia. There will be five that have
never been on tour. Box lunches will be sold at each home for
$6.50.
Free tax-preparation help
Representatives of the AARP Foundation are offering free
assistance in the preparation of tax returns for middle- and
low-income residents age 60 and over at the Powhatan Library.
Social security cards for all dependents are required, and

Alzheimer’s support group
Alzheimer’s caregiver support group will meet the third
Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Powhatan United Methodist

Basketball contest
There will be a basketball shooting contest held at every Amelia
home J.V. and varsity basketball game. The contest will be
conducted at halftime of each game. Contestants of all ages are
welcome. All proceeds will benefit the Raider baseball program.
Bingo
Powhatan High School Band Boosters sponsor bingo every Saturday at
the Powhatan Volunteer Rescue Squad Building. Doors open at 5 p.m.
Early games begin at 6 p.m., with regular games starting at 7 p.m.

Weight-lifting in the Amelia Parks and Recreation gym is open

VFW Post 8759 meetings
VFW Post 8759 and its Ladies Auxiliary meet the second Wednesday
night of each month at 8 p.m. at the Amelia Veterans Center. All
VFW members and auxiliary members are urged to attend.
MOPS
MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) meets the first and third Wednesday
of each month thru May. They will meet from 9 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

Powhatan Breakfast Lions Club meetings
The Powhatan Breakfast Lions Club meets the first and third

Powhatan women’s forum
The Powhatan-Goochland Domestic Violence Program sponsors the
Women’s Health and Safety Forum. Meetings for the forum are held

Amelia Clothes Cottage
The Amelia Fire Auxiliary Clothes Cottage (across from the Amelia
Middle School) is open on Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1
p.m.
Due to a shortage of space, the Clothes Cottage cannot accept
donations of clothes or household items at this time. Furniture
and used appliances are still welcome. If you have items to
